“I was raised in a Baltimore suburb wild with unkempt hedges, disheveled lawns and porches, yards full of car parts and swimming pools, and a church or a bar on every corner. This neighborhood, located just inside the city line, is the inspiration for much of my work and sets the scene for Metal Gods.
Both a coming-of-age story and a tale of first love, Metal Gods examines the lives of a group of friends in southeast Baltimore who live and love heavy metal, kids who are literally, geographically, socially, and economically skirting the fringes of the city. Without compass, in a modern world where traditional rights of passage have all but disappeared, these teens are gods of their own destiny: exploring identity and meaning, and making hard choices between right and wrong.
