metalgods

Casting for Metal Gods began in November 2008 with open auditions in Baltimore hosted by the American Visionary Art Museum, Baltimore School for the Arts, Carver Center for Arts and Technology, Overlea High School, and Abbot Memorial Presbyterian Church.

To date, over 300 auditions have been recorded.

Like Matt Porterfield's first feature, Hamilton (2006), Metal Gods will require an ensemble cast of young people. We are primarily targeting local talent, kids and adults in the Baltimore area with an interest in performing and a desire to learn.

This decision is artistic as much as it is practical – there is a tradition of realism, dating back to the birth of the cinematic arts, which favors a combination of trained actors and non- professionals. Brought to its fullest realization in Italy by De Sica, Visconti, and Rosselini, and in France by Robert Bresson, this practice continues today in the work of Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne (Rosetta, Le Fils), Ramin Bahrani (Man Push Cart, Chop Shop), in recent films like Ballast and Frozen River, and in the Baltimore HBO series "The Wire."

We are pleased to announce that 16-year-old L.A. actress and rising pop star Sky Ferreira is slated to play a principal role in Metal Gods, that of wayward teen Jenny Kijek. 2009 marks a breakthrough year for Ferreira. Her debut record featuring production from the Grammy winning Bloodshy and Avant, Blaqstarr, and the Bloody Beetroots is scheduled for release this year. To hear her describe the album – "Bridgette Bardot, ice cream trucks, warrior paint, and Britney Spears, all on a rocket ship" – it sounds like magic. We had the opportunity to listen to some tracks in January (in her Mom's car with the windows up, heads bopping, top secret) and, suffice it to say, it's like nothing else on the radio.
